Guitar music has enjoyed an enormous resurgence over the past few years but every so often it's good to remember the guitarists that thrilled us in the '60s and '70s and inspired so many of us to pick up the guitar. Duane Allman playing slide guitar on a late '50s Les Paul on Layla - it didn't get much better than that in 1970!
Great tone is what every guitarist needs - the guitar pickups you use are the key. The original Gibson P90 and PAF humbucker, fitted to Gibson's Les Paul model, and the Telecaster and Stratocaster single coil guitar pickups are the pickups that defined the sound of the modern electric guitar. As Gibson and Fender have struggled to replicate the sounds of their original guitar pickups a wide range of manufacturers like Seymour Duncan, DiMarzio, EMG, Rio Grande and Bare Knuckle have sprung up to provide guitar pickups that can replicate these classics as well as provide new sounds. STOP PRESS - PRICE CUTS on EMG Pickguards. EMG have just cut the price of their range of pre-wired pickguards. For example, list price on the DG20 Dave Gilmour pickguard was £385 inc VAT but it's now £299, and we've cut it even further to £285 inc VAT!! !
STOP PRESS - TREMBUCKER/F-SPACED PICKUPS Occasionally there is confusion over whether to buy a Trembucker/F-Spaced or standard spaced humbucking pickup. The DiMarzio position is that most guitars, with the exception of vintage-style Gibson guitars should be fitted with F-spaced pickups at the bridge and guitars with a nut width of 43mm & above should also have an F spaced neck pickup. Seymour Duncan's position is that Trem equipped guitars should be fitted with Trembuckers at the bridge and standard spaced at the neck. All non-trem guitars should be fitted with Standard spaced pickups. However, Seymour Duncan's range of Trembuckers is fairly limited. Bear in mind that the difference between the two is only 2mm!! - so don't get too hung up about it!!
