What makes a great vintage humbucker? A soft magnetic field, sweet tone, a perfect balance between warmth and clarity, the ability to go from clean to distorted by pick attack alone. There are many pickups that capture some of these qualities, but we wanted to build them all into one pickup, and this is it. Totally redesigned for 2008, we bring you the new DiMarzio PAF® available in standard or F-spacing. Partly based on the pickups in Larry DiMarzio's own 1959 Les Paul and partly on our own patented technology, the PAF® will perform equally well in the neck or bridge position, just as the best humbuckers from the '50s did.

Want to go totally retro? This PAF® in standard spacing only comes with authentic vintage bobbins in glossy black and single conductor wiring as standard. Options include vintage "Patent Applied For" long-legged nickel-silver base and your choice of polished and plated or vintage worn cover.

All positions

There is no reference standard for the sound of a humbucker from the 1950s. All of them had variations in output and tone, and these differences could be quite large. Recently, we have focused our research on making pickups with warm highs and bright lows. This combination is only found in our favorite vintage humbuckers, and it’s really good for a pickup intended for both the neck and bridge positions. It allows the bass strings in the neck position to avoid muddiness, and the treble strings in the bridge position to be warm and not brittle.

The DiMarzio Bluesbucker® looks like a standard humbucker, but sounds like a P90 and cancels 60-cycle hum as effectively as the average humbucker. This means any guitar with standard size humbuckers can now have the sound of P90s without altering the guitar in any way and without noise. Patented Virtual Vintage® and Airbucker™ technology let the Bluesbucker® "see" a narrow string window like a true single-coil, making it extremely sensitive to playing dynamics. When a pair of these pickups are on together, they achieve the open, slightly hollow sound that two single-coils produce. Splitting the pickup produces a sound similar to that of a Strat® pickup, with very little drop in output. Recommended for: All positions

The coil with the 6 adjustable slotted poles is the "hot" coil. The coil with the solid poles is along for the ride to cancel hum and look cool. Since one coil is doing most of the work, the direction the Bluesbucker® is installed makes an obvious difference in the sound. When the hot coil is closest to the bridge, the sound is brighter; towards the neck is warmer. Even though the look is a little nontraditional, we like the sound of the bridge pickup "backwards" (with the screw coil towards the neck). With a Bluesbucker® in the neck position with the screw coil towards the bridge (also "backwards") the combined sound is Tele-like. With the neck pickup in the more traditional direction, the combination is like two P-90s. The Bluesbucker® comes with special wiring instructions.

Gibson (NOT Epiphone) Les Pauls, SGs, 335s, Flying Vs, etc should be fitted with standard spacing pickups while ALL others should be fitted with F-spaced pickups.

Wiring: Four Conductor
Magnet: Ceramic
Output: 265mV
DC Resistance: 9.85K

The standard colour is black and F-spaced black models are usually available ex-stock. Standard spaced and covered models are often available ex-stock but may need to be back ordered. Covers are only available on screw and slug polepiece models.

If you like the look of double cream coils - DiMarzio is the only manufacturer - however, it is a special order from the factory - as are Zebra coils - and delivery is 4-6 weeks. Other colours are available on special order -please enquire. All special orders must be paid for upfront and are non-refundable unless the product is faulty.

Although Eric Johnson is best known as a Strat player, he has always played humbucker-equipped guitars as well. After getting a new 1959 Les Paul re-issue, Eric asked DiMarzio if it could be made to sound like an old Gretsch Country Gentleman guitar, and they said, "No problem!" The pickups they designed are exact replacements for standard, full size humbuckers. They are bright with great presence without sounding thin. When Eric tried them, he said they were almost as clear-sounding as Strat pickups, and he was surprised at how well they sounded with heavy distortion, because no matter how overdriven the sound, it did not become muddy. Recommended for: All positions, solid, semi-solid and hollow-body electric guitars

If you look at the DC Resistance specs for these pickups, you will see they're very similar to PAF®-style models. However, their performance is very different in two important areas. They have less power and much more treble response than "vintage" humbuckers. In fact, treble response is comparable to that of typical single-coils, but since bass response is still very solid, the EJ Custom™ isn't thin-sounding. It's outstanding for chords and fingerpicking, and has exceptional definition for soloing, even with extreme amounts of distortion.

Because a conventional humbucker senses the string at two different places, it cancels some frequencies along with the hum. What if there were a humbucker that canceled fewer frequencies? It would be brighter and cleaner: almost glassy-sounding. In other words, it would almost sound like a Strat pickup, but with about the same power as a PAF. DiMarzio created The Humbucker From Hell primarily as a neck pickup. You won't believe how much it will open up the sound in the neck position of a Les Paul, and it has an almost acoustic quality in the neck spot of a bolt-on guitar. Why is it called THe Humbucker From Hell? Try it in the bridge position with a bright amp--but put in your earplugs first, and don't say you weren't warned.

The standard colour is black. If you like the look of double cream coils - DiMarzio is the only manufacturer - however, it is a special order from the factory - as are Zebra coils - and delivery is 4-6 weeks. The SH-55 was designed jointly by Seymour and humbucker inventor Seth Lover. Just like the original 1955 P.A.F.s, the SH-55 utilizes a nickel silver bottom plate, butyrate plastic bobbins; plain enamel wire, an Alnico bar magnet, a wooden spacer, and black paper tape. The SH-55 uses a nickel silver cover instead of brass, which magnetically eliminates too much of the pickup's natural high-end tone. To be completely true to the original design and tone, the pickup is not wax potted. The tone is vintage P.A.F. - smoother and warmer than the 59 model.

The neck pickup will warm up even the coldest guitar. And the unpotted covers give the bridge pickup just enough boldness to break up early and really cut. Also available with a gold-plated cover. Single conductor cable standard. Four conductor cable available upon request. Pickup comes with flat bottom, slanted surround; springs, height screws and pickup surround screws.

DC Resistance - 8.1khz
Resonant Peak - 5.9 khz

Players: Joe Perry / Aerosmith (neck & bridge), Gary Rossington & Rickey Medlocke / Lynyrd Skynyrd (neck & bridge), Blues Saraceno, Dweezil Zappa, Sheryl Crow (neck & bridge), George Pajon Jr. / Black-Eyed Peas (neck & bridge), Steve Stevens (neck & bridge)

Seymour Duncan Antiquity Humbucker Seymour Duncan Antiquity Humbucker

The Antiquity humbucker is a faithful replica of the great sounding "patent applied for" humbuckers that Seth E. Lover designed in 1955. The pickup comes with slight variations in DC resistance, just like the old ones. Seymour Duncan decided to wind the bridge pickup a little hotter and better balanced for its position. The mounting ring is slightly higher for the increased pickup height. The pickup is not wax potted to retain the sound and appearance of the originals. Again, each pickup is built by hand in the "Antiquity" room and every magnet and bottom plate are signed to guarantee that you are getting an original Seymour W. Duncan Antiquity™. Hookup wire includes the classic braided "push back" cloth braid wire.

Warm, slightly-hotter-than-vintage humbucker. Great for blues, classic rock, southern rock, jam, and hard rock. Originally designed as a recreation of the pickups in the '59 Les Paul® Standard that defined the raw, rebellious sound of Texas blues-rock.

The Pearly Gates is sweet, but slightly rude, with great sustain and a bright top end that make harmonics jump out of the guitar. Comes with four-conductor hookup cable.

Often used in both neck and bridge positions. Can be used in the bridge with an APH-1n Alnico II Pro in the neck for smoother tones; or, a Pearly Gates in the neck with an SH-11 Custom Custom for heavier rock sounds from the bridge position. For brighter toned instruments. Works especially well with maple and ebony fingerboards. Also works great with hollow and semi-hollow body guitars. Nickel or gold-plated cover. Trembucker.

Warm, moderate-output humbucker. Great for jazz, blues, classic rock and slide. The Alnico 2 magnet and moderate windings yield a warm, sweet tone with more natural string vibration for great sustain. Classic rock players who get their distortion from the amp rather than the pickup love the APH-1. It allows them to back off the crunch and get beautiful clean tones with softer attack. Compared to the '59, the Alnico II Pro has a rounder sound with a spongier bass response. Comes with four-conductor hookup cable and no logo.

Often the APH-1 is used in both neck and bridge positions, eg Slash. Or, in the neck with a higher output pickup like an SH-11 Custom Custom or SHPG-1b Pearly Gates for heavier rock or hotter blues sounds from the bridge position.

For brighter toned instruments. Works especially well with maple and ebony fingerboards. Also works great with hollow and semi-hollow body guitars. Options of Nickel or gold-plated cover, Trembucker version.

Players: Slash / Velvet Revolver & Guns ‘N Roses (neck & bridge), Michael Wilton / Queensryche (bridge), Jeff Tamelier / Tower of Power (neck), Tim Mahoney / 311 (neck), Troy Van Leeuwen / Queens of the Stone Age (neck)

SH-1/ TB59-1b -- The most important thing about the vintage Patent Applied For pickup was its warm, smooth tone and sustain that was unlike anything heard before. The SH-1 is built with the same kind of enameled wire, nickel-plated studs, and balanced coil windings that humbucker inventor Seth Lover used in his first pickups. It looks and sounds just like a '59.

Available in black, zebra (cream & black), reverse zebra and white as well as the following colors at no extra charge -- red, red & black, pink, green, light blue, dark blue & yellow.

Single conductor cable is standard, four conductor is available upon request. With traditional or Trembucker spacing. Also for 7-string guitars, available in black only.
