DiMarzio has combined the best qualities of the DiMarzio DP404 Virtual Vintage Solo™ and DiMarzio DP414 Virtual Vintage Solo Pro™ – high output and a full, warm sound – and pushed these qualities even further. Treble response is smoother, the lows are tighter, and there is more pick attack. Play hard, and the sound jumps out of the amp. Play softer, and the sound becomes cleaner and quieter. And of course, there’s no hum.

Bridge

The Virtual Vintage Solo™ and Solo Pro™ both have specific qualities Dimarzio likes a lot, but they felt the sound could be even bigger. Making the highs both fatter and louder without any loss of definition on the lows creates a bridge pickup that can sound both warm and intense, and the Virtual Solo™ performs equally well with clean and heavily overdriven amps.

When DiMarzio started working with Billy Corgan on the pickups for his signature Strat®, they sent him several models to try out. He liked the Air Norton® S in the neck, Chopper™ in the middle and Tone Zone® S in the bridge. After playing them on several gigs, he asked for some changes in the neck and bridge pickups. He wanted a deeper sound from the low strings without losing any punch, and he didn't want the sound to get muddy with high-gain amps. To do this, we lowered the frequency response of one of the the coils in each pickup just enough to boost the bass while opening up the mids. The end results are the pickups that are now in Billy's signature Strat®. They do exactly what he wants in humbucking mode, and he's found they work really well in split mode as well.

The output and DC resistance specs of the DiMarzio® BC-1 and DiMarzio® BC-2 are very similar to those of the Air Norton® S. The difference is in the tuning of the coils, and how this affects the way they interact with each other. It can be described as more of a "feel" than a sound difference - Billy's pickups seem to move more air.

DiMarzio Virtual Vintage Heavy Blues 2 (DP409) DiMarzio Virtual Vintage Heavy Blues 2 (DP409)
{DESCRIPTION}The Virtual Vintage® Heavy Blues 2 replaces the Virtual Vintage® Heavy Blues and the VirtuAL 2® bridge model. It’s a hot bridge pickup with a strong attack in the bridge position, and its Alnico 2 magnets allow it to work very well in the neck position as well, for players who want a very warm, round sound. Recommended For: Bridge; can also be used in neck and middle.Standard colour is white - a range of custom colours is available by special order.

{TECH TALK}The same technology that allowed us to create the pure vintage Strat® sound of the Area ‘58™ can also be used to design a much heavier pickup. The Heavy Blues 2™ has more mids and lows while still possessing outstanding pick attack. This also makes it an excellent pickup for the arpeggios and sweep picking classical metal players prefer, because it does not become muddy even with high gain

The Virtual Vintage® ’54 Pro uses the same ground breaking technology as our Area ’58™ and Area ’61™ pickups. The ’54 Pro replaces the Virtual Vintage ‘54 and VirtuAL 2® middle pickups. It has a warm, smoky sound, fattens up when you pick hard, and has a special grade of Alnico 2 magnet to reduce string pull. And like all of the Virtual Vintage® models, it’s dead quiet. Recommended For: All positions. Standard colour is white - a range of custom colours is available by special order.
The major difference between the ’54 Pro and the Area ’61™ is in pick attack. The ’54 Pro has a fatter, ‘woody’ tone, and the sound almost seems to compress when picked hard. Blues players favor this type of sound for the way it fattens up solos, particularly in the bridge position. It’s also good in the neck and middle positions to warm up bright-sounding guitars.

The Air Norton S™ is the Strat® replacement version of the full-size Air Norton™. It’s warm-sounding, very well balanced, and has the same unique tonal characteristics as the original. The original Air Norton™ wasn’t designed for a specific position or type of guitar, but it’s become most popular in the neck position of trem-equipped guitars for progressive music (thanks, John!). The S version is also a very good bridge pickup for all types of rock. Its combination of medium output and harmonic bite are very effective for single-note soloing as well as chords.

Vintage bridge pickup, custom staggered magnets with more power/mids. The difference between a vintage Strat® bridge pickup sound and a classic Broadcaster® or Tele® tone is mostly a matter of attack and definition - the Strat® stings and screams, while the Tele® punches and sings. We thought it would be neat to have a Strat® pickup that does both, and this is it. The punch comes from the bottom-loaded Power Plate™, the sting from custom coil-winding and the True Velvet™ magnet stagger, and a unique mid-range ?growl? that’s a result of a hand-calibrated magnet structure. Try a Red Velvet™ bridge pickup with a pair of True Velvet™ pickups for a sound that’s both classic and new.

All positions

One of the obvious effects of mounting a plate on the bottom of a pickup is to boost the magnetic field. We wanted the bigger sound that the plate provides, but we didn't want any increased magnet-pull, so we calibrate the magnetic field of every Red Velvet™ after it's assembled. The Red Velvet™ was originally designed for the bridge position, but it will also work well in the neck and middle, where it can be combined with a bridge humbucker like the Air Classic™.

The original 70s "Fat Strat" tone - with solid punchy attack. Some players find the traditional Strat® bridge pickup sound clear and sparkling, while others think it’s almost painfully bright. You know who you are, and the FS-1™ is for you. It’s louder (about 25% more power) than a stock single-coil, and smoother and fatter-sounding all-round. When you combine the FS-1™ in the bridge with True Velvet™ in the middle and neck, you’ll have a guitar with calibrated, balanced tone in all five switch positions. For a bigger, more aggressive sound by and large.

You can install FS-1™ pickups in all three positions

DiMarzio didn't design the FS-1™ with a vintage sound in mind, but if you're trying to get a blues sound from the bridge position of a maple-neck Strat, you'll be very happy with the extra mids and bass, and the sound still cleans up when the volume is rolled down.

Named in honour of Yngwie Malmsteen, the YJM is an HS-3 with staggered poles for added presence- just how he likes them. You might not realize it from his music, but Yngwie Malmsteen is a vintage Strat® collector, and he swears by his 50s and 60s axes. He also swears by our HS-3™, and he’s always wanted a vintage magnet-stagger version to go with his best guitars. While there is still a strong resemblance to the HS-3™, the YJM™ has more presence and brilliance, particularly on the high strings, and still no 60-cycle hum. Yngwie uses it in the neck and middle positions of his main guitars, and it’s also the standard neck pickup on his signature model Strat®.

All positions.

Works well in all 3 positions for slightly warmer than usual Strat sound. The vintage 50's magnet stagger is a subtle change from the standard HS-3™. It alters the overall tonal balance so there's a little more clarity and string definition, and highs cut through, particularly higher up the neck. Most recently, Yngwie has been using the YJM™ in the middle and neck position, with the HS-3™ in the bridge position.

Fast Track but with a classic PAF tone. It’s warm, it’s friendly, it sounds like a vintage PAF® and will drop right into your Strat®. The Pro Track™ has enough power for any pickup position, and the twin black blades mean there won’t be any problems with string-alignment or dropouts. In the bridge position, this is a great blues pickup: combine it with The Cruiser® (neck) and a Fast Track 1™ (middle) for a solid mix. Pair two Pro Track™ pickups in the neck and middle positions with a Fast Track 2™ or any full-size humbucker in the bridge position for a heavy yet versatile rock sound.

All positions.

We've heard from several players who need to play some jazz numbers without switching guitars, and they say the Pro Track™ is an excellent neck pickup. If you install a push-pull pot, you can switch the coils from series to parallel, which will add a more single-coil type sound while still canceling hum.

The Chopper™ is the louder, punchier brother of the Fast Track 1™. More power is concentrated in the mids and low end for a bigger sound with more crunch. It shares the same side - by - side coils and twin-blade construction as the Fast Track 1™, so there are no misaligned poles or string-pull problems. We originally designed it as a bridge pickup to combine with The Cruiser™ and Fast Track 1™, but it’s also a good neck pickup when you’ve got a hot humbucker in the bridge position.Hotter and bigger than the Fast Track 1 - single coil attack/tone.

All positions

Excellent choice to fatten tone and increase power of Strat bridge position. Can be part of calibrated set with 2 Fast Track 1™'s or Cruiser™ (DP187) neck and Fast Track 1™ (middle).

Humbucking stacked coils - more bass and less treble than the HS-2 which is used as the middle pickup in the Steve Vai Evolution set. DiMarzio originally created the HS-3™ to be a warmer bridge-position companion to the HS-2™. Yngwie Malmsteen adopted it for his standard neck and bridge pickup, and almost overnight the HS-3™ acquired the reputation of being a high-powered metal pickup. This isn’t really the case - the HS-3™ is actually a smooth and relatively quiet pickup that produces a sweet overdrive tone without jagged edges. What Yngwie discovered is that these qualities combine perfectly with a heavily distorted amp, because the sound won’t get muddy or messy. The HS 3™ is also versatile - it’s a noise-free pickup in a live situation or in the studio.

All positions

Works well in all 3 positions on a Strat for a slightly warmer-than-usual Strat sound. Also works well as a bridge pickup with YJM™ (neck) and HS-2™ (middle). Combines in middle and neck positions with bridge humbuckers like PAF Pro®, PAF®, Air Classic™ and Norton®.

What do you need in order to play blues with a Strat®? The Virtual Vintage® Blues has more power and warmth than a typical single-coil. You can really hear these qualities when you’re playing the Virtual Vintage® Blues. It withstands hard picking and opens up when you’re playing with an overdriven amp. Instead of shrinking away, the sound jumps out of the speakers. These qualities are really useful for getting a fat neck position sound, but they’re outstanding for the bridge position - particularly if you have a thin-sounding guitar or use light gauge strings. It’s a tough sounding bridge pickup with warmer guitars, and makes a good neck and middle choice to match with a full-size bridge humbucker. As the rest of the Virtual Vintage® family, it’s dead quiet; there’s practically no hum at all.

Recommended for all positions.

The Blues model is a more muscular pickup than the standard DP401. Unlike thinner-sounding single-coils, it stands up to hard picking - the sound seems to expand through an overdriven amp instead of shrinking away. This quality is really useful for the neck position, particularly if you have a thin-sounding guitar or use light-gauge strings. With warmer-sounding guitars, it's a strong, tough-sounding bridge pickup. We recommend using 500K controls for extended frequency response, although there's no problem using 250K controls if you like the warmer tone they provide.

Seymour Duncan SLSD-1 George Lynch L'l Screamin' Demon Seymour Duncan SLSD-1 George Lynch L'l Screamin' Demon

Moderate output single-coil-sized humbucker. Great for classic rock, jazz-rock fusion, heavy rock and aggressive instrumental rock. Like its big brother the Screamin' Demon™ humbucker, this li'l savage combines a big, open sound with just a subtle hint of "glass." George asked for a pickup that could scream and provide rich harmonics, but would clean up when he backed it off. Using a unique slotted and Allen head screw combination that gives each coil a slightly different magnetic field, the tone is big and percussive without being too harsh. Comes with four-conductor hookup cable. USA Patent No. Des. 355,207.

Available for both bridge and neck/middle positions. Often used in the bridge position and matched with a pair of Duckbuckers, or a Duckbucker in the middle and a Little '59 in the neck. For all well-balanced instruments. Works equally well with maple and rosewood fingerboards.

Seymour Duncan SSL-6 Custom Flat Pole Pickup Seymour Duncan SSL-6 Custom Flat Pole Pickup

Beefed up true single-coil for warm instruments. Perfect for Texas blues rock, classic rock and heavy rock. This pickup combines the same coil design as the SSL-5, with hand ground rod Alnico 5 magnets of equal length raised above the flatwork. The flat magnet pattern provides the balanced field necessary for an even response using today's strings (unwound "G") and flatter neck radii. The more even output response is noticed when bending strings. Like the SSL-5, the pickup is powerful and present, great for over-driven tones. Includes white cover.

Calibrated set available with RW/RP middle pickup.

Many players use an SSL-6 in the bridge position with vintage output pickups, like SSL-2's, in the neck and middle for tonal versatility. For heavier and brighter-toned instruments with ash or alder bodies. Works well with maple or rosewood fingerboards. Reverse wound, reverse polarity (RW/RP) middle pickups for hum-canceling in positions "2" and "4" on the five-way switch.

Extremely balanced true single-coil pickup. Recommended for country, pop, blues, classic rock and heavy rock. Alnico 2 magnets provide warmth and softer attack on the three high strings. Alnico 5 magnets provide punch and brightness on the low strings. It's like having two separate presence controls: one optimized for the high strings and one for the low strings. The result is a very balanced pickup with a bright and springy bottom end, and a smooth and rich top end. Includes white cover.

Calibrated set includes a higher-output custom bridge pickup, RW/RP middle and regular neck pickup.

For all well-balanced instruments. Works equally well with maple and rosewood fingerboards.

Seymour wound this pickup hotter for added output and fullness. Like his Texas Hot™, this pickup is both magnetically and physically aged to sound and look like a '50s pickup but with an added punch. Each comes with a specially aged cover - Seymour doesn't just mold his covers with custom colors so that they look old. The magnets are calibrated and the coils are wound "top going" with North polarity, the same as the early vintage models. Each pickup comes complete with screws, schematics, and vintage "push back" cloth braid hookup wire.

High output true single-coil for warm instruments. Perfect for Texas blues rock, classic rock and heavy rock.

Calibrated set available with RW/RP middle pickup. Many players use an SSL-5 in the bridge position with vintage output pickups, like SSL-1's, in the neck and middle for tonal versatility.

Joe Barden S-DeLuxe Pickup Joe Barden S-DeLuxe Pickup
The S-Deluxe models are the Strat™-equivalent to the Danny Gatton Tele pickups. Two models are available; one for the bridge position and the other for the neck and middle positions.

The tone of the S-Deluxe is absolutely Strat™ in character, but with greatly expanded fidelity and a balanced frequency response. Of course, hum and noise are completely eliminated. These pickups are incredibly sensitive, giving you a wide range of tones and output levels simply by adjusting the distance of the pickup from the strings.

With S-Deluxe pickups, the "in-between" positions are wonderfully hollow, and the bridge pickup has the strength, snap, and twang typically experienced only in Telecasters.™ The unique staggered-blade design of the bridge pickup, common to all Joe Barden single-coil sized bridge pickups, eliminates drop-outs on the outer strings.

All S-Deluxe pickups are designed to fit standard Strat body routs with no modifications to the instrument. The pickups utilize 4 conductor shielded cable to allow for any possible wiring combination and are supplied with wiring diagrams download and mounting hardware to facilitate installation.
